Engineering Unit Converter

This engineering unit converter covers the units that come up in design and on site: stress (MPa, psi, ksi, kgf/cm²), force (kN, kip, tf), moment (kN·m, kip·ft), line load, unit weight, density, flow, velocity, energy, power and temperature, as well as length, area, volume and mass.

Area includes the Nepal land units ropani, aana, paisa, daam, bigha, kattha and dhur. Each conversion also lists the value in every other unit of that quantity, so one entry gives you the full set.

How to use it

  1. Choose the Quantity, for example Pressure & stress or Area (incl. Nepal land units).
  2. Type the number in Value.
  3. Pick units in From and To. The answer is the first line of the results.
  4. Press ⇄ Swap units to reverse the conversion.
  5. Read the All units list for the same value in every other unit, and use Copy results if you need them in a report.

How the conversions work

Each unit is stored as a factor to one SI base unit (Pa for stress, N for force, m² for area and so on). The tool multiplies your value by the From factor and divides by the To factor. Temperature goes through °C instead: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and K = °C + 273.15.

UnitFactor used
1 psi6,894.757 Pa
1 kgf/cm²98,066.5 Pa
1 kip4.448222 kN
1 kip·ft1.355818 kN·m
1 kip/ft14.5939 kN/m
1 lbf/ft³ (pcf)157.087 N/m³
1 acre4,046.856 m²
1 ropani / aana / paisa / daam5,476 / 342.25 / 85.5625 / 21.390625 ft² (1 ropani = 508.74 m²)
1 bigha / kattha / dhur72,900 / 3,645 / 182.25 ft² (1 bigha = 6,772.63 m²)

The Nepal units are defined exactly in square feet and converted with 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m², so 1 ropani is 508.737 m².

Answers are rounded for display. Values of 1,000 or more show no decimals, smaller values show more, and anything from 10 million up or below 0.001 switches to scientific notation, such as 2.500 × 10⁷ Pa.

Worked example: 25 MPa to psi

Engineering unit converter set to pressure and stress, converting 25 MPa to 3,626 psi, with the same value listed in Pa, kPa, GPa, N/mm², bar, kgf/cm², ksi, psf and atm
Default example: 25 MPa converted to psi, with every other stress unit listed below.
  1. Convert to the base unit: 25 MPa × 1,000,000 = 25,000,000 Pa.
  2. Divide by the psi factor: 25,000,000 / 6,894.757 = 3,625.94 psi, shown as 3,626 psi.
  3. 1 ksi is 1,000 psi, so the same stress is 3.626 ksi.
  4. kgf/cm²: 25,000,000 / 98,066.5 = 254.9. Bar: 25,000,000 / 100,000 = 250.0.
  5. psf: 25,000,000 / 47.880 = 522,136. Atmospheres: 25,000,000 / 101,325 = 246.7.

A mental check: 1 MPa is about 145 psi, and 25 × 145 = 3,625.

Units that catch people out

  • kg/cm² on older drawings means kgf/cm². 1 kgf/cm² = 0.0981 MPa, so 200 kg/cm² concrete is about 19.6 MPa.
  • Ton has three meanings. The tool lists t (tonne, 1,000 kg), short ton (907.18 kg) and long ton (1,016.05 kg). tf is tonne-force, 9.807 kN.
  • Published Nepal land conversions in m² differ in the last decimal place, for example 508.72 against 508.74 m² per ropani. For legal documents, use the figure your land revenue office applies.
  • Second moment of area (mm⁴) and section modulus (mm³) are not in this converter. 1 × 10⁶ mm⁴ equals 1 × 10⁻⁶ m⁴, so the number stays the same.

Questions people ask

How many psi is 1 MPa?

1 MPa is 145.04 psi, and 1 psi is 6.895 kPa. So 25 MPa is 3,626 psi, and 4,000 psi is 27.6 MPa.

How many square feet are in 1 ropani?

1 ropani is 5,476 ft², split into 16 aana of 342.25 ft² each. That is 508.74 m² per ropani, the figure the converter uses. One aana is 4 paisa, and one paisa is 4 daam.

How many kattha are in a bigha?

There are 20 kattha in a bigha, and 20 dhur in a kattha. The converter uses 1 bigha = 72,900 ft² (6,772.63 m²) and 1 kattha = 3,645 ft² (338.63 m²).
